DBT Therapy at Sequoia Counseling
DBT Therapy
Our primary modality — building real-world skills for a life worth living.
What Is DBT?
A Life Worth Living Is Possible
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is our primary modality at Sequoia Counseling. It balances two powerful ideas — acceptance and change — to help you build a life that feels worth living, no matter what you're carrying.
"DBT doesn't ask you to choose between accepting yourself and changing. It says both are true — and both are necessary."
— The Sequoia Counseling Team
The Four Modules
Skills You Can Actually Use
DBT is built around four interconnected skill sets that address the full range of emotional and relational challenges.
Distress Tolerance
Learn to survive crisis moments without making things worse. Distress tolerance skills help you ride out intense emotions without acting impulsively — building resilience one hard moment at a time.
Emotion Regulation
Understand what your emotions are telling you, reduce vulnerability to emotional overwhelm, and change unwanted emotional states. You learn to feel your feelings without being ruled by them.
Mindfulness
The foundation of DBT. Mindfulness teaches you to observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment — creating space between what you feel and how you respond.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Build and maintain healthy relationships, set boundaries with confidence, and ask for what you need — without damaging the connections that matter most to you.
Who It Helps
DBT Works for a Wide Range of Struggles
Originally developed for BPD, decades of research show DBT is highly effective wherever emotional dysregulation plays a role.
Chronic emotional pain or mood instability
Difficulty managing anger or intense reactions
Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and depression that haven't responded to other treatments
Relationship patterns that feel stuck or destructive
At Sequoia
What to Expect in DBT at Sequoia
Our DBT-informed sessions are individual therapy — a collaborative, one-on-one space where your therapist works with you to apply DBT skills to your specific life and challenges.
Sessions are structured but warm. Your therapist will help you identify patterns, practice new skills, and process the experiences that have shaped how you relate to yourself and others.
DBT at Sequoia is woven together with other approaches — including Brainspotting, somatic work, and trauma-informed care — so your treatment is always tailored to you as a whole person.
